80S Design Revival: Interior Designers Embrace Bold Patterns and Nostalgia

Interior designers are drawing inspiration from the vibrant design trends of the 1980s, injecting a playful and distinctive style into contemporary homes. The era’s hallmarks – trim, fringe, borders, and layered patterns – are receiving a modern update.

Key Trends from the 80s

“The ’80s was really the heyday of decorating,” says Kati Curtis of Kati Curtis Design. “I don’t want to recreate an ’80s room literally, but I love bringing that richness and attention to detail into a modern context.”

Designers are incorporating elements like floral upholstery, strategically used to create a fresh and contemporary feel when paired with cleaner silhouettes and modern materials. Scalloped headboards, reminiscent of the ‘Golden Girls,’ are also gaining popularity, balanced with modern drapery and geometric patterns.

Tropical wallpaper, evoking Miami Vice, is being used sparingly alongside minimalist elements like striped ceilings and geometric drapery. Mirrored surfaces, a staple of 80s interiors, are being utilized in smaller spaces to create a sense of spaciousness, often paired with animal print textured wallpaper and sleek hardware.

Modern Interpretations

“We want spaces to feel eclectic and timeless, while giving a few nods to the ’80s,” explains Alex Alonso of Mr. Alex Tate Design. The goal is to capture the spirit of the decade without creating a dated aesthetic.
