Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Opens in Los Angeles with Futuristic Design

Los Angeles, CA – The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, designed by Chinese architect Ma Yansong of MAD, officially opened its doors on September 22, 2026, in Exposition Park.

A Galaxy-Inspired Design

The museum’s striking appearance, resembling a spaceship that has landed, is due to its uniquedesign, featuring a roof covered in trees, plants, and solar arrays. A rain fountain at one end serves as a renewable cooling system.

Architectural Vision

Architect Ma Yansong collaborated with Michael Siegel of Stantec and Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA to create the building’s futuristic forms and sinuous lines. The structure utilizes over 1,500 individually crafted panels of curved fiberglass-reinforced polymer, with dramatic cantilevers.

Focus on Narrative Art

The museum’s collection, curated by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, encompasses millennia of religious and imperial art, alongside works by illustrators, comic book artists, and outsider artists. Highlights include ultra-high-tech reproductions of historical landmarks and pieces by R. Crumb and Norman Rockwell.

Democratic Approach

Lucas explained that the museum’s aim is to foster a democratic and engaging experience for visitors, particularly young people. “Narrative art creates an emotional connection, not an intellectual one,” added Hobson, emphasizing the museum’s egalitarian spirit.
