Artist Sunshine Thacker Builds Dream House in Hudson Valley

Sunshine Thacker, an internationally renowned ceramicist, realized her lifelong vision of a home in a shaded clearing in the Hudson Valley. The house, a blend of contemporary design and nostalgic elements, is constructed primarily of glass, iron, and wood, south-facing to maximize natural light.

A House Rooted in Inspiration

Thacker described the project as stemming from a sudden inspiration, quickly assembled with remarkable ease. The structure incorporates a painted steel skeleton, paying homage to Jean Prouvé’s pioneering work, including the Demountable House and the House of Better Days.

The design philosophy centers on color, material, and ample space. Thacker drew inspiration from Case Study houses, appreciating their use of industrially manufactured components and practicality. A modular grid in garnet red establishes the rhythm of both the exterior and interior, supporting a gabled ceiling clad in cherry wood panels.

Notable design elements include a yellow Saba Italia sofa, a two-tone sofa designed by Thacker, a ceramic Nuclear Option coffee table, and lighting fixtures by Achille & Pier, Giacomo Castiglioni (Flos), Mark Meleki, and Thacker. The backsplash features handmade tiles and Rosso Lepanto marble, while terracotta pieces by Ron Meyers are displayed on shelves. The living room features a painting, “The Party’s Over Darling” by Kim Dreyer.”,n
