Desert modernism reborn: lawson & robins reimagine rancho mirage retreat

The California desert, a crucible of midcentury modern design, has yielded another remarkable transformation. Designers Ryan Lawson and Sean Robins, known for their discerning eye and Studio Van Den Akker furniture showroom, have breathed new life into a vintage Rancho Mirage residence, demonstrating a masterful understanding of light, texture, and the enduring power of understated elegance.

A chain of decisions, rooted in the landscape

Lawson describes the project as an “intuitive, but super studied” process, a cascade of decisions where each choice organically informs the next. The initial purchase of the midcentury home, the architect of which remains a mystery lost to a local fire, served as the starting point. While not perfectly preserved, the house possessed undeniable appeal: proximity to a lake, soaring ceilings punctuated by handsome beams, and a palpable sense of warmth emanating from the wood planks.

But the unrelenting desert sun presented a significant challenge.
