Elizabeth Taylor’s Bel Air Estate to be Preserved in $47 Million Makeover

Elizabeth Taylor’s famed two-story ranch-style home at 700 Nimes Road in Bel Air will not be demolished, despite earlier reports.

Developer Plans $47 Million Renovation

The 7,000-square-foot residence, where the star lived from 1981 until her death in 2011, will remain intact, undergoing a significant facelift. Current owner and mega-mansion developer Ardie Tavangarian’s plans include a 12,000-square-foot subterranean and above-ground buildout.

‘Elizabeth Taylor Wing’

Tavangarian stated the original home will essentially serve as the “Elizabeth Taylor wing” of the revamped property. Key areas, including her primary suite, beauty center, and gem room, will be renovated, while the rest of the house will be refashioned into a new build.

Preserving Taylor’s Legacy

The designer plans to install a gallery featuring Taylor-related art. The icon’s swimming pool, koi pond, and rose garden will remain largely unchanged. The above-ground addition will increase the home’s height to two stories and, in some areas, three. Tavangarian intends to maintain visual cohesion by carrying over the original home’s exposed brick facade.

Amenities and Design

Highlights of the new additions include a state-of-the-art screening room, a “pajama room,” a 4,500-square-foot retractable roof for stargazing, and a spa. Taylor moved into 700 Nimes Road shortly after Nancy Sinatra’s residency. The property was originally a bungalow sold by Sinatra before being purchased by Taylor.
