French design studio transforms 248-square-foot attic into peaceful paris retreat
In the heart of Paris, a 248-square-foot attic once divided into maid's quarters has been revamped into a serene retreat by French design studio ABL. Led by architect Baptiste Legué, the renovation aimed to unite the space while incorporating clever storage solutions and unique design elements.
Unifying the space
Before the makeover, the attic was characterized by a dark, compartmentalized layout. Legué's vision was to create a cohesive space that still respected the building's historical integrity. He achieved this by painting the walls above the oak built-ins with a lime wash, which not only provides a fresh, airy feel but also serves as a unifying element throughout the apartment.
A key aspect of the renovation was optimizing the use of the attic's vertical space. Legué designed a system to maximize storage, incorporating a walk-in closet, washing machine, and other service elements within the lower ceiling areas.
Custom features and unique materials
One of the standout design choices is the incorporation of stone sinks in the bathroom, crafted from a rare, translucent variety featuring ochre veining. Legué explains that this material choice adds depth and visual interest compared to traditional marble.
In the kitchen, a terrazzo counter features river sand instead of marble chips, offering a distinctive aesthetic. The sleeping area boasts a custom, light oak design, with a raised platform that incorporates a bench for entertaining guests.
Throughout the apartment, Legué carefully selected materials to create a thoughtful balance of textures and tones. In the bathroom and separate toilet room, polished concrete floors provide a striking contrast to the matte and glossier surfaces elsewhere in the space.
This innovative renovation not only transforms the functionality of the attic but also elevates it into a sophisticated Parisian pied-à-terre. By merging the past with the present, ABL's design studio has created a unique retreat that celebrates the building's history while adapting to modern living.
