Marble's risky revival: a newport estate redefines opulence
A Newport, Rhode Island estate has rewritten the rules of marble design, proving the material’s potential beyond cold formality. HAAS Design’s Galen Kirby masterfully leveraged this luxurious stone – sourced from across Europe – to create a home that’s both breathtaking and remarkably lived-in.
A calculated risk, stunning results
The client’s ambition was ‘all out’ on marble, a bold request that Kirby met with a curated selection of unique stones, including exceptional alabaster console tables and a dramatic fireplace. But the designer didn’t simply layer marble; they wove it into the very Architecture, extending it to the kitchen range hood, backsplash, and even the windows.
“We wanted to avoid the museum effect,” Kirby explains. “The key was pairing the intensity of the marble with softer textures – plasterwork, warm wood tones, and crisp white shiplap – to create a sense of depth and movement.”
Plasterwork: a quiet counterpoint
The incorporation of Marmorino plaster, a new material for the team, proved pivotal. “It introduced a grounding element, allowing the veining of the marble to truly shine,” Kirby states. “It’s a delicate balance – the plaster provides a tactile backdrop without competing for attention.”
Beyond the countertops
The project’s longevity isn't just about aesthetics; it’s about enduring quality. Kirby emphasized the importance of selecting materials that could withstand the wear and tear of a family life. “We spent countless hours refining choices – millwork, fabrics, everything – to ensure a refined yet durable outcome.”

Importantly, the family’s input was paramount. “Client inclusion is the secret ingredient,” Kirby insists. “This house reflects their lifestyle, their passions, and their stories.” The result is a space that feels undeniably personal, a testament to thoughtful collaboration.

The palette – White Dove by Benjamin Moore – is deliberately calming, a stark contrast to the room’s inherent energy.

The kitchen’s marble extends beyond the countertops, embracing the range hood, backsplash, and window casings. “It’s not just a decorative element; it’s a defining characteristic of the space,” Kirby notes. “The veining adds a dynamic quality, while the soft palette prevents it from feeling overwhelming.”

Warm wood tones, aged brass accents, and shiplap create a lived-in feel, a deliberate departure from the cold, polished aesthetic often associated with this material.
