Atlanta—Singer Usher’s sprawling family estate, a meticulously curated blend of personal memorabilia and contemporary art, offers a rare glimpse into the creative mind of a music icon. Designed in collaboration with longtime architect and designer Nicole Fuller, the Georgian-style residence is far more than a showcase of luxury; it’s a living testament to Usher’s journey and cultural influences.
A Tapestry of Memories
From the foyer, dominated by Gordon Parks portraits—including a striking image of a Black woman and child outside a segregated department store entrance—to the custom-designed furniture and vibrant artwork, every element tells a story. Fuller describes the home as “our first moment of inspiration,” a deliberate effort to honor Usher’s past while embracing a forward-looking vision.
“We looked at this photo and decided this is the inspiration—in palette, in feeling, in moodiness, in tone and texture,” Fuller stated. “It was our first moment of inspiration for the story of this home.”
The residence seamlessly integrates Usher’s career milestones, from his early street art beginnings—represented by a commissioned piece by Lauren Halsey—to his Grammy Awards and Super Bowl halftime performance trophy. A replica of his childhood tattoo, now enlarged into a ceiling mural in his son Naviyd’s room, further underscores the family’s legacy.
Personal Touches, Bold Statements
Beyond the high-profile art pieces, it’s the intimate details that truly define the space. A custom sofa, transformed from a plastic-covered relic of his mother’s past, now serves as a multigenerational conversation starter. The children’s playroom, adorned with stuffed animals and artwork by Jammie Holmes, is a vibrant reflection of their individual personalities. Even the breakfast room features handprints of each family member, a tangible reminder of their shared history.
“Creatively, they say, you don’t color over the lines,” Usher remarked, showcasing the home’s unconventional aesthetic. “Well, we do here.”
The property boasts a diverse collection of artists, including Damien Hirst, Rashid Johnson, and Tyler Mitchell, reflecting Usher’s commitment to supporting Black artists. The home isn't a museum, according to Usher, but a living, breathing space where family and creativity intertwine. “It’s not like the most expensive piece wins the best wall. That’s not the case in this house,” he explained.
Despite a recent knee surgery, Usher is back on the road, co-headlining a stadium tour with Chris Brown. His Atlanta home, a testament to his artistic vision and personal journey, serves as a grounding force amidst the whirlwind of his career.
