In 1941, just a year after their whirlwind elopement, Ball and Arnaz purchased a five-acre property in the San Fernando Valley suburb of Chatsworth. Designed by acclaimed architect Paul R. Williams, the ranch house was dubbed Desilu, a portmanteau of the couple's names that later became the title of their successful production company.

Over the next 15 years, Ball and Arnaz made the property their own, adding amenities like a swimming pool that Arnaz famously filled with floating gardenias for Ball's 30th birthday.
