Coastal retreat: home's revival honors history, embraces timeless charm
In the idyllic beach town of Nags Head, North Carolina, a renovation project unfolded with a singular, ambitious goal: to seamlessly integrate a new Home with the existing coastal vernacular. The owners, longtime residents of the community, sought a space that felt instantly familiar, a place where friends and family could relax without a second glance.
Preserving heritage, reinventing space
The design team, led by Baltimore-based Winsome Interior Design, achieved this by meticulously layering period-inspired details with modern sensibilities. Instead of a complete demolition, the project skillfully repurposed the existing structure, creating a Home that whispers of history rather than shouts of new construction.
The kitchen, a collaboration with Unique Kitchens & Baths, exemplifies this approach. Two-tone cabinetry, reminiscent of Julia Child's kitchen, offers a subtle vintage vibe. Unlacquered brass hardware and fittings are chosen to develop a beautiful patina over time, further enhancing the Home’s sense of age.
Details matter: a sense of place
Even seemingly minor elements contribute to the overall atmosphere. A hallway adorned with a piece from artist Mary Maguire evokes a sense of timeless maritime charm. The dining nook, cleverly carved out of the wraparound deck, offers ample seating for 12, a common gathering size during the summer months.
Bedrooms, designed with both children and adults in mind, feature built-in beds that nod to sailors’ quarters, yet retain a refined and playful aesthetic. The primary bathroom blends modern design with nostalgic touches, including café curtains depicting fishing boats and cottages.
The homeowners' vision – a house that felt as though it had always been a cherished part of the community – wasn’t simply aesthetic. It was about creating a space infused with warmth, comfort, and a deep connection to the coastal landscape. The result is a Home that’s both beautifully updated and deeply rooted in its history, a testament to the power of thoughtful design.
