Waco's own: gaineses revive historic cottonland castle, trading farmhouse for timeless elegance

A treasure hunt within walls

The restoration of Cottonland Castle, nestled in Waco’s downtown, wasn't simply about fixing cracks and replacing worn materials. The Gaineses unearthed a treasure trove of original features – including eight fireplaces, original millwork, and antique fixtures – that dictated the project's direction. Jo Gaines even collaborated with KILZ on a custom paint line specifically for the castle, highlighting a commitment to historical accuracy.

The project wasn't without its challenges. Years of sanding had rendered many of the original floors beyond repair, necessitating the use of reclaimed antique planks from the same period. Similarly, matching the weathered limestone exterior proved difficult, prompting Chip Gaines to devise a unique staining process mimicking the castle's original patina.

The renovation wasn't just about preserving the past; it was about honoring the Home's significance. The Gaineses meticulously sourced period-appropriate materials, scouring antique fairs like the Round Top Antiques Fair for pieces that would seamlessly integrate into the design. The dining room, for instance, features antique chairs and a chandelier, while the kitchen incorporates repurposed elements like a dining table and chairs from the fair.

The transformation extends beyond the grand rooms. The child's bedroom features a subtle blush hue, while the teen's bedroom retains original window grills – a nod to the Home's architectural history. Throughout the castle, the Gaineses preserved all eight of the existing fireplaces, adding new tile where necessary. The library showcases original doors recovered from the basement, while the butler's pantry boasts custom windows mirroring the originals.

Despite the emotional attachment, the Gaineses plan to sell Cottonland Castle.
