Forget minimalist chic. This sprawling Nantucket compound, recently completed by designer Henry Boyle, is a glorious explosion of personality – and a serious haven for furry friends and impromptu celebrations.
A chaotic, beloved space
The Connecticut couple who commissioned this project clearly prioritize connection and joyful living. It’s a place where the schedule bends to the rhythms of family, dogs, and spontaneous gatherings, a constant stream of visitors drawn to the property’s infectious energy. Boyle, working with Vicente-Burin Architects and Hanley Development, has crafted an environment that feels less like a meticulously curated showpiece and more like a vibrant, lived-in family home.
Breaking the rules, building memories
Boyle intentionally challenged the client’s initial desire for a younger aesthetic, layering in bold contemporary art, sculptural lighting, and Scandinavian-inspired millwork. “It needed, he says, to ‘feel beachy and homey and appeal to everyone they entertain,’” the wife explained. This wasn’t about adhering to a prescribed ‘Nantucket’ look; it was about distilling the essence of island warmth and making it universally inviting.
Details that delight
From the vintage rattan poufs sourced from Brimfield Flea Market to the meticulously chosen paint palette inspired by John Roman Brown’s artwork, every element tells a story. The strategic use of color – buoyant yellows, misted grey-blues – mirrors the surrounding landscape, visually connecting the interior to the dramatic ocean views. Even the decision to reorient the structures to maximize sunlight and buffer the beach access road was a key design consideration.
A practical vision
Boyle’s focus on functionality is evident throughout. The zoning regulations presented a significant challenge, requiring a 50-foot-long skylit tunnel to connect the main and guest houses – now a dedicated rec room. He cleverly employed millwork as ornamentation, adding subtle rhythm without overwhelming the space. And, crucially, he secured dedicated pantry refrigeration for the family’s beloved dogs.

“It’s already been the setting for countless memories—from large family reunions with meals around the clock to spontaneous dance parties,” the wife reflects. “It’s a place made for gathering, celebrating, and making memories.” Boyle’s success lies in his ability to translate a client’s vision into a tangible reality – a space that’s both deeply personal and effortlessly welcoming. He’s moved beyond simply designing a house; he's created a genuine hub for connection and joy.
