Ritz yacht gets a tropical overhaul by johanna ortiz
The world’s elite have always demanded the superlative – and Ilma, one of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s trio of luxury vessels, is raising the bar. Forget subtle accents; this $600 million floating palace has undergone a vibrant, two-deck transformation courtesy of Colombian fashion designer Johanna Ortiz, injecting a serious dose of tropical energy into the high seas experience.

A designer's vision takes shape at sea
The collaboration, launched in mid-February and extending through the summer Mediterranean season, is more than just a cosmetic upgrade. Ortiz, known for her exuberant prints and sophisticated silhouettes, aimed to capture the essence of the destinations Ilma sails through, creating a “natural extension of the places it visits.” Rather than a sterile, nautical aesthetic, she opted for “tropical elegance and a sense of place that feels relaxed and immersive.”
The results are striking. Deck 10 now boasts the “La Rumba” print – a captivating royal blue featuring a clever sailor's knot motif interwoven with lush tropical flora – adorning sunbeds, lounge chairs, parasols, and cushions. The vibe is undeniably social, as evidenced by the lively conversations and upbeat music often accompanying long afternoons spent circling the main pool and outdoor bar. Ortiz explains the blue hue was specifically chosen to amplify that energetic, nautical atmosphere.
But the experience isn't limited to boisterous gatherings. Deck 9, the Observation Terrace, offers a more secluded sanctuary, tucked away amongst the staterooms. Here, the “La Siesta” print – a calming green infused with botanical silhouettes – fosters a sense of stillness and restoration. The deliberate contrast highlights Ortiz's meticulous attention to detail, ensuring each space caters to different moods and moments.
The designer’s inspiration extended beyond mere color palettes. Ortiz drew from the yacht’s architecture and the landscapes encountered during Ilma’s voyages. “There is a quiet elegance throughout the yacht and a strong relationship to natural light and the sea,” she noted. “We wanted to introduce a layer of energy and expression while remaining in harmony with the yacht’s refined foundation.” This careful balancing act is what elevates the collaboration beyond a mere decorative flourish.
Interestingly, Ortiz’s influence extends beyond these newly transformed decks. Her designs are already available in the ship’s boutique, and discerning passengers have been spotted showcasing her dresses while enjoying Michelin-starred cuisine at Seta su Ilma or exploring coastal destinations via catamaran. Gaby Aiguesvives, chief marketing officer of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, confirms the synergy: “Many of our guests are already familiar with Johanna’s brand. Her work is rooted in storytelling and a beautiful attention to detail with a warmth that feels elegant yet inviting.”
Ortiz herself witnessed the transformation firsthand during a three-day voyage through the Virgin Islands. “As a designer, you spend so much time imagining how a pattern will inhabit a space,” she reflected, “so witnessing them unfold with the sea and sky as a backdrop felt very special.” Seeing the spaces actively enjoyed, becoming integral to the passenger experience, underscored the true impact of the collaboration.
The vibrant takeover isn't just a fleeting trend; it’s a testament to the power of thoughtful design to elevate a luxury experience, transforming a vessel into a floating canvas of style and serenity. And with summer in the Mediterranean fast approaching, the Ilma promises to be the most fashionable voyage on the sea.
