Designing a dual narrative: white farmhouse meets woodsy escape
San Antonio-based couple faced a familiar design dilemma: differing aesthetic desires. One envisioned a crisp white farmhouse, while the other craved a cozy, woodsy retreat. Fortunately, Seattle-based designer Kylee Shintaffer, specializing in elevated rustic style, expertly navigated the divide, collaborating with Fullerton Architects to create a truly unique space.
Nestled along a river inlet off Flathead Lake, the project prioritized a seamless integration with the surrounding landscape. Natural elements – Montana moss rock and reclaimed timbers – were thoughtfully incorporated throughout, satisfying the desire for a rustic sanctuary. The strategic placement of the home ensured every vista offered a distinct perspective of the river, fields, and mountains.
The shintaffer secret: balancing contrast
Shintaffer’s clever design hinged on a masterful juxtaposition of styles. The interior brightened with whitewashed wood walls, contrasted by dark-stained windows, creating a striking visual pop. The centerpiece – a towering white plaster chimney surrounding a stone fireplace – was deliberately designed to avoid overwhelming the room, acting as a focal point while showcasing the breathtaking views. Guest rooms and a barn-turned-guesthouse provide ample space for visitors, and a meticulously designed mudroom maximizes organization. Outside, an expansive deck provides a perfect spot for enjoying the Montana scenery. Careful use of materials – rock, timber, and stone – creates a cohesive and deeply satisfying experience.
